Welcome to Between Flights

Hi, and welcome to Between Flights.

I’ve been thinking about starting this blog for a very long time. And, like many things in my life, I kept finding reasons to postpone it. I wanted the website to look better first. I wanted to have enough articles ready. I wanted to know exactly what the blog was going to be about.

Eventually, I realised that if I waited until everything was perfect, I would probably never start.

So here we are.

My name is Sima. I’m originally from the Czech Republic, but these days I call Malta home. My life is a little bit all over the place — quite literally. I work as a flight attendant in private aviation, teach Pilates when I’m home, take photos whenever I get the chance, and somehow still manage to spend a ridiculous amount of time looking for good coffee wherever I go.

Travel has been a huge part of my life for years.

My first flight was when I was 18, and a few years later I moved abroad and eventually started working as cabin crew. Since then, flying has taken me to places I probably would never have visited otherwise. I spent several years living in Dubai, travelled to more countries than I can easily count anymore, and later moved into private aviation, which brought a completely different kind of travel into my life.

After around eight years of flying, I’ve also realised that I have a few things I almost automatically look for whenever I arrive somewhere new.

One of the first is always a good coffee shop.

Maybe it’s the Czech in me, because we really do love our coffee culture, but finding a nice café has become such a big part of how I experience a city. I love places with good coffee, a nice atmosphere, somewhere you can sit for a while, people-watch, work a little or just enjoy the fact that you’re somewhere new.

And since becoming a Pilates instructor, I’ve added another thing to that list: Pilates studios.

Now when I travel, I often find myself looking up studios in the area, checking what classes they offer and sometimes booking one if my schedule allows it. I love the idea of discovering a destination not only through its sights and restaurants, but also through the little routines I enjoy in everyday life.

That is definitely something I want to bring into this blog too.

Why Between Flights?

The name actually describes my life pretty well.

A lot of my life happens somewhere between flights.

Sometimes I have two weeks at home in Malta. Sometimes I’m packing again after only a few days. Sometimes I wake up not completely sure which country I’m in until I look outside the hotel window.

Over the years, I’ve collected an unreasonable amount of screenshots, saved locations, Google Maps lists, restaurant recommendations, cafés, Pilates studios, little travel discoveries and notes on my phone.

Friends also regularly message me things like:

“I’m going to Malta — what should I do?”

“Where should we stay?”

“Do you know a nice coffee shop there?”

“Do you know any good Pilates studios?”

“What should I pack for this flight?”

“Is this place actually worth visiting?”

And instead of keeping everything buried somewhere inside my Notes app, I thought it might be useful to finally put it all in one place.

What you’ll find here

Travel will definitely be the heart of this blog.

But probably not in the traditional Top 10 Things You Must See kind of way.

I want to share places I genuinely like, things I would recommend to my own friends and little details that can make travelling easier.

You’ll find city guides, cafés, restaurants, hotels, things to do, Malta recommendations and probably plenty of slightly random discoveries from my trips.

And because these are the things I naturally look for myself, expect plenty of coffee shop recommendations and Pilates studios too.

For me, they’re part of travelling.

Sometimes a beautiful café can tell you as much about a neighbourhood as a famous attraction can, and trying a Pilates class in another city is also a fun way to experience somewhere differently and feel a little more like a local.

Because of my job, I also spend a lot of time on airplanes and in airports, so there will naturally be some aviation here too — flying tips, things I’ve learned after years of travelling for work and little tricks that make long travel days easier.

And then there are the other parts of my life.

Photography, living abroad, Malta, good food and occasionally trying to figure out how to fit five different careers and hobbies into one week.

Basically, this blog will probably look a little like my life does: a mixture of everything, connected by travel.

Travel doesn’t have to be complicated

One thing I’ve learned after travelling so much is that the best trips aren’t necessarily the most perfectly planned ones.

Sometimes it’s the coffee shop you randomly find around the corner.

The Pilates studio you book because you have a free morning.

The beach you stop at because someone local recommended it.

The restaurant that wasn’t anywhere on your original list.

Or simply having enough time to sit somewhere with a coffee and watch the city go by instead of rushing from one attraction to another.

I want Between Flights to help you plan the important parts while still leaving space for those moments.

If one of my articles helps you find your favourite café in Malta, discover a great Pilates studio while travelling, makes your next flight a little more comfortable or gives you an idea for your next trip, then this blog is already doing exactly what I wanted it to do.

So whether you’re planning a holiday, moving abroad, looking for somewhere good to eat, searching for your next favourite coffee spot or simply daydreaming about your next destination…

Welcome.

I’m happy you found your way here.

Sima x
